Snow removal in Kanata
Tell us your Kanata street, the driveway and the walks and steps you want cleared. We pass the request to one independent snow clearing company that works the west end, and it calls you to price the winter.
In short
- 01Kanata is about 22 km west of downtown Ottawa along Highway 417, on the far side of the Greenbelt.
- 02Beaverbrook, Kanata's first and oldest neighbourhood, is known for its hedged houses; north of the 417 the Town Centre has townhomes and stacked townhomes.
- 03City rules keep snow off streets, sidewalks, pathways and parks, so whatever comes off your driveway and walk stays on your lot.
- 04HomeStars lists Kanata residential clearing at $40 to $150 a visit and seasonal contracts at $300 to $1,800+.

What to ask before you book
- Q1Does your crew shovel the walkway, front steps and the strip in front of the garage, and is that done once per storm?
- Q2Along a hedged driveway, where will you put the snow, and who pays if a shrub is broken?
- Q3Which parts of Kanata do you cover, north and south of the 417?
- Q4For a condo townhouse, do you need the property manager's permission before working on the lot?
- Q5When do the driveway markers go in, and who pulls them out in spring?
Before the visit
- Street and nearest main road: March Road, Terry Fox Drive, Campeau Drive, Hazeldean Road, Eagleson Road or Katimavik Road
- Length of the front walk, number of steps, and any side path to a back or basement door
- Photo of the driveway from the street, showing hedges, shrubs or stone edging
- For a condo or stacked townhouse: what the corporation clears and the property manager's contact
- For a house on a new street: whether the driveway is paved yet
Three kinds of Kanata street
Bill Teron began building modern Kanata in the 1960s as a planned community with a mix of densities. Beaverbrook was first, and it is still known for its hedged houses. Glen Cairn is among the oldest areas too. The plan also took in Bridlewood, Katimavik and Hazeldean, and new streets are still going up north of Terry Fox Drive in Morgan’s Grant and Briarbrook, and in the south of Bridlewood.
A snow company sees three different jobs in that spread: older lots framed by hedges and mature planting, townhome and stacked townhome blocks north of the 417, and new streets where landscaping may still be unfinished. Say which one is yours.
Walks, steps and the garage front
A driveway machine clears the drive. The front walk, the steps and the strip right in front of the garage door are hand work, and some companies price them as a separate option. List what you want shovelled, how long the walk is and how many steps lead to the door.
Ask how often the shovel crew comes. One east-end firm’s published terms, for example, shovel once per storm, after the snow has stopped.
Stacked townhomes north of the 417
North of the highway, the Kanata Town Centre area has a large mix of townhomes and stacked townhomes. In a condo corporation, ask the property manager which areas the corporation’s own snow arrangement covers and whether its rules limit who can work on the lot. Then send us the part that is yours to clear.
Markers and the edge of the lot
Markers show the operator where the driveway ends and the lawn, curb or garden begins. The City’s guidance is wood, plastic, fibreglass or metal, no taller than a hockey stick, set back from the street or sidewalk. Point out buried edging, lights and low walls before the first snow, while the company can still see them.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Snow Desk sends your Kanata request to one independent snow clearing company that works the west end. That company calls you, sets the season price and clears the snow.
Questions
01My driveway in Beaverbrook runs between two hedges. Does that change the job?
It limits where the snow can go. The City bans putting it on the street, sidewalk, pathways or parks, so a hedged driveway leaves the lawn and the hedge line as the only places to pile it. Send a photo so the company can plan the throw and the markers.
02I live in a stacked townhouse north of the 417. Do I need my own contract?
Ask your property manager what the corporation’s contract already covers: parking areas, the shared walk, your own steps. Write what is left over in the request, and the company prices only that.
03What kind of driveway markers can the company put in?
The City asks for wood, plastic, fibreglass or metal markers no larger than a hockey stick, set back from the street or sidewalk, so they do not damage City equipment or get broken by it.
04How far out in Kanata will the company come?
Kanata runs from the Greenbelt west past the Carp River, and north to the urban boundary along Old Carp Road. Write your postal code or nearest main road so the company knows at once if your street is on its route.
