What to ask before you book
- Q1Can you show your City snow plow contractor licence and the plate on the machine?
- Q2Do you salt or sand the walk and steps, and is that priced apart from clearing?
- Q3Will you come back after the City's street plow has been by?
- Q4Can you do one clearing after a storm, or only a full season?
- Q5Will you put the price, the trigger depth and what is cleared in writing?
Before the visit
- Street and nearest main road: Baseline Road, Merivale Road, Woodroffe Avenue or Greenbank Road
- Your side of Baseline Road: north or south
- Length of the front walk, number of steps, and any side path to a back door
- Photo of the driveway and walk from the street
- Spots that ice over, such as under a downspout or on a shaded slope
Older streets west of the core
Nepean’s original township hall stood in Westboro, which Ottawa annexed in 1950; the centre then moved to Bells Corners. Through the 1950s and 1960s its urban area spread into rural land, with Centrepointe in the east and Barrhaven in the south. Nepean became a city in 1978 and joined Ottawa in 2001. In 2021 it had 186,593 residents.
List every surface you want cleared: the front walk, the steps to the door, any side path to the back. Add a photo, and the company can price the hand work along with the driveway.
Sidewalks and walkways
The City clears residential sidewalks after 5 cm of snow, and the work can take 12 to 16 hours after the snow stops. Residential streets follow after 7 cm, on a 10 to 16 hour timeline. The snow from your own walk and driveway stays on your lot under the Use and Care of Roads By-law, and the windrow the street plow leaves is yours to clear.
Ask the company whether it returns after the City plow, and whether salting or sanding the walk and steps is part of the price.
Checking the company
The City licenses snow plow contractors, and a hired company must hold a valid business licence. The City’s SNOW KNOWledge brochure for contractors adds the details: an orange plate with a valid annual sticker on the snow plow vehicle, the name and phone number on each side of it, and insurance coverage of at least $2 million. It may not dump snow on public property or on private property other than yours. Ask for the licence on the first call.
Snow Go west of the core
Baseline Road splits most of Nepean between two community agencies for the City’s Snow Go matching service and the Snow Go Assist subsidy. North of Baseline, the Olde Forge Community Resource Centre serves the area west of Woodroffe Avenue (north of the Queensway) and Clyde Avenue (south of it), postal codes K2B and part of K2C. South of Baseline and west of Fisher Avenue, including Bells Corners and Barrhaven, the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre does. The City’s page lists every agency by postal code. Snow Go Assist is open to residents 60 or older or with a disability who meet the income rules and have no one in the home able to do the work, and the 2026/2027 deadline is November 27, 2026.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Snow Desk passes your Nepean request to one independent snow clearing company that works the west end. That company calls you, prices the clearing and does the work.
Questions
01Is Barrhaven part of Nepean for this request?
Barrhaven was part of the City of Nepean until 2001 and has its own page here. This page covers the rest of Nepean, from Bells Corners and Centrepointe to Craig Henry, Arlington Woods and the Merivale Road area. Write your postal code and the company sorts out the route.
02Who clears the public sidewalk in front of my house?
The City plows residential sidewalks once 5 cm has fallen. Your part is to keep driveway and walkway snow off it: the Use and Care of Roads By-law bans pushing or shovelling snow onto sidewalks, streets, pathways and parks. Tell the company to bank the snow on your lot.
03How do I check that a Nepean snow company has a City licence?
The City requires a snow plow contractor licence for anyone running a snow plow business; people using only a shovel or a manual snow-blower are exempt. Ask for proof of the licence, look for an orange plate with a valid annual sticker on the machine, and check the list at ottawa.ca/consumerawareness. Report an unlicensed contractor to 3-1-1.
04Can I book one clearing after a big storm?
Ask on the call. HomeStars puts one-time service in Nepean at $60 to $120 an hour and notes that a seasonal contract often puts a property on a priority route, which can mean shorter waits.
