In short
- Ottawa snow crews start from the snowfall. One east-end firm works 24 hours a day and says it cannot promise a particular time.
- After overnight snow, that firm generally starts at 5 a.m. and usually finishes its first pass before noon.
- The City plows residential roads from 7 cm and may take 10 to 16 hours after the last snowflake, so the ridge at the driveway end can come after the crew.
- A 2.5 cm trigger brings crews out for lighter snow. On one Ottawa firm's list it takes a single driveway from $649 to $1,149 a season.

Why the arrival time moves from storm to storm
Ottawa snow companies start from the snowfall. One east-end firm works around the clock: a fall of 10 cm or less is cleared once it has come down, a bigger one when 10 cm is on the ground. A Kanata and Stittsville firm writes into its terms that visit times vary from storm to storm.
A storm ending at 2 a.m. and one ending at 9 a.m. put the same driveway at very different hours. Trigger depth adds a second variable: on a 5 cm contract, a 4 cm fall brings nobody. The trigger depth guide shows how the threshold changes the number of visits.
How a route is built
A route is the list of properties one tractor operator and one shovel team clear. The east-end firm builds its routes from client count, driveway sizes, distance between stops and City plowing. Main roads and bus routes go first, then the crews follow the City graders around the side streets. Routes stay the same from storm to storm so operators learn each property.
For a homeowner, that means your place in the order is roughly fixed for the season. Houses on busy streets pay more with both firms: the east-end firm lists a $100 + HST main street surcharge, and the Kanata firm prices main, bus and sidewalk streets higher because their driveway ends need more clearing.
Overnight snow and the drive to work
The east-end firm’s rule of thumb: after overnight snow it starts at 5 a.m. and usually finishes the first pass before noon. When the City plows residential streets during the night, the firm also works overnight and tries to open driveways before people leave for work. Routes are built to finish in 6 to 7 hours, and its terms say completion times can vary.
Its storm notices from last winter show how that plays out:
- 11 January 2026. Snow from about 8 p.m. Operators started at 3 a.m., shovel teams at 6 a.m., City graders due around 8 a.m.
- 22 January 2026. Snow until about 3 a.m. Operators out at 3:30 a.m., shovel teams at 7 a.m.
A 5 a.m. start with a route of several hours can reach a house after a 6:30 departure. Put your leaving time in the request and ask where your street sits.
The City’s clock and the ridge at the end
City crews work by road priority. Highway 174, the Transitway and arterials are plowed from the start of accumulation. Secondary roads come at 5 cm. Residential roads and lanes need 7 cm or more and may take 10 to 16 hours after the last snowflake. A declared Significant Weather Event can pause all of those timelines.
When the private crew finishes before the City plow reaches the street, the plow then pushes a ridge across the driveway end. The City makes that ridge the owner’s job. What your contract says about return passes is on the windrow page.
The car, the street and the overnight ban
A parked car leaves a rectangle of snow, and both firms clear only the open area. The east-end firm offers a free call-back, usually opened the day after the storm, in a 3-hour window of your choice when the cars are gone. The Kanata firm returns only when a full second pass is already planned.
Moving the car to the street has a rule of its own. From 15 November to 1 April the City can call an overnight parking ban, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., when 7 cm or more or freezing rain is forecast. The City aims to make that call by 9 a.m. Cars on the street without a residential parking permit may be fined and towed. More on the parking ban guide.
Paying for earlier or more frequent passes
What firms sell in the open is a lower trigger. One Ottawa firm’s list puts a single driveway at $649 a season on 5 cm and $1,149 on 2.5 cm, a double at $749 or $1,349, and says the 2.5 cm tier means roughly double the visits. The east-end firm adds 2.5 cm service to a 5 cm season for a flat $250 + HST.
Walkways run on a slower clock than the tractor, so a lower trigger does little for the front steps at 6 a.m. Hand shovelling is priced and timed on the walkways and steps page.
Get the timing in writing. One Ottawa firm’s seasonal agreement lists the expected window for clearing after snowfall ends among its terms. Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act expects a written contract for snow removal services over $50.
What to tell the company about your mornings
- The time the first car has to leave on weekdays, and on weekends if it differs
- Shift work or night hours, so a 3 a.m. tractor is expected
- Whether a car stays in the driveway overnight, and where it goes during a ban
- Care or medical visits that need the walk open early
- Your street type: main street, bus route, or a City sidewalk across the driveway end
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Snow Desk passes your request to one independent local snow company. That company calls you back, explains where your street sits on its route and when its crews usually start, and does the clearing.
Questions people ask
What time will the crew clear my driveway?
The snowfall sets the start, and firms say so in writing. One east-end firm cannot promise a particular time, and a Kanata and Stittsville firm’s terms allow clearing at any hour of the day or night.
Can I pay to be first on the route?
The price lists opened for this page sell a lower trigger depth; none of them sells a set place in the order. HomeStars’ Ottawa page says a seasonal contract often puts a property on a priority route, which can shorten the wait. Ask the company where your street falls.
The driveway was clear at 4 a.m. and blocked again by 8. Why?
The City plow came through after the crew and left a ridge. Whether a return pass is in your price is a contract question for the company.
How many days of 5 cm or more does an Ottawa winter bring?
Environment Canada’s 1981–2010 normals at the Ottawa airport count 15.1 days a year with 5 cm or more of snowfall and 5.3 days with 10 cm or more. Snowfall of 0.2 cm or more is recorded on about 63 days, so a lower trigger brings the crew out more often.
When do the walkway shovellers come?
After the snow stops. One Kanata firm’s shovel crews start at the end of each 5 cm snowfall and may take up to 12 hours to finish their routes.
