Two kinds of street south of the airport
Riverside South sits just southwest of the airport, in what was the City of Gloucester until 2001. In the early 1990s the area was mostly vacant, with a few houses and some farms; the new community’s first homes went up in 1996. By 2021 about 19,800 people lived here, mostly around River Road, Earl Armstrong Road and west of Limebank Road. The plan carries it south toward Manotick and east toward Leitrim.
Honey Gables, three streets on the west side of River Road, was first built around 1950. Name your street so the company knows whether it is pricing an older lot or a new one.
A new house in its first winter
A new build often has details a crew cannot see from the road:
- Unpaved driveway. One Kanata–Stittsville firm says some gravel gets blown onto the lawn until the ground freezes. Ask whether the price changes after paving. See gravel driveway snow removal.
- Low vents. Tarion lists furnace, dryer and fireplace vents among the spots to keep clear, since a blocked vent can let carbon monoxide build up. Ask whether the crew clears around one beside the driveway.
- Window wells. Tarion also names window wells and the foundation, where meltwater can work into cracks.
- Houses still going up. Say so; the company needs to know where it can turn and pile snow.
Snowfall measured next door
The airport station, about 5 km north, averages 223 cm a winter (1981–2010): 15 days with 5 cm or more, 5 with 10 cm or more, and a 25 cm fall about once every two to three winters. Snow 1 cm deep or more lies on the ground about 117 days a year. A 25 cm dig-out may be billed apart: one firm lists $120–$220 a visit.
The commute and the City ridge
Limebank Road slows down on weekday mornings as commuters head downtown; the O-Train reached Limebank in January 2025, and the bridge to Barrhaven opened in 2014. The pile the City plow leaves at the end of a driveway is called a windrow, and the City names the property owner as responsible for removing it. Ask about the return trip (windrow clearing) and say when you leave (early morning clearing).
The driveway end
The Use and Care of Roads By-law prohibits placing snow or ice on the City’s right-of-way, so it stays on your lot. The City asks residents to help keep hydrants on their property clear and to keep snow away from catch basins, which carry a yellow “T” bar painted on the road. Marker setbacks depend on the sidewalk: driveway markers.
Reading the quote
One Ottawa firm whose area list names Riverside South advertises 2026–27 estimates of $440–$580 a season for a single driveway and $520–$700 for a double, with windrow-only visits at $60–$100. HomeStars puts an Ottawa residential season at $300–$1,800+.
The quote should name the trigger, season dates, the ridge return, any snowfall cap, the 25 cm storm rule, walkway and steps, and HST. Under Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act, most agreements over $50 must be in writing, and snow removal is named among them. If the contract holds a written estimate, the final price cannot be more than 10% above it unless you sign a change. A contract signed in your home always has a cooling-off period.
Checking the company before November
City snow plow contractor licences expire every year on October 31, and any business plowing private property with a snow plow needs one. The City’s brochure tells residents to look for an orange plate with a valid annual sticker and to check the list at ottawa.ca/consumerawareness. People using a shovel or a manual snow blower are exempt.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Snow Desk takes your Riverside South request and passes it to one independent local snow removal company. That company calls you back, sets the price for the winter and clears the driveway under its own contract.
Questions to ask the company
- How soon after a storm does my street come up on your list?
- What does the price assume: car spaces, walkway, steps?
- Is the return for the City plow ridge in the season price?
- My driveway is unpaved gravel. Does the price change once it is paved?
- Can I see this winter's licence and the total with HST in writing?

- Low side-wall vents and window wells to keep clear
- Where snow can be piled on your lot

Questions people ask
Which Snow Go agency covers Riverside South?
Addresses here use K1V or K4M. The City’s table puts K4M with Rural Ottawa South Support Services and splits K1V among three agencies, including the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre, which lists Gloucester. Call with your street to confirm.
What can Snow Go Assist pay?
Up to 50% of each snow event, to $250 a season, for residents 60 and over or with a disability, under an income limit. The City lists a November 27, 2026 deadline. See Snow Go and the agencies.
When does the City plow my crescent?
Arterials go first. Residential roads wait for 7 cm and may take 10 to 16 hours after the last snowflake; residential sidewalks start at 5 cm.
My street has a sidewalk on one side only. Where do my markers go?
Schedule 4 of the licensing by-law: 1.5 m (5 ft) back from a sidewalk, or 2.1 m (7 ft) from the road where there is none, at most 1.22 m (4 ft) tall, October 20 to April 30.
Does a winter parking ban change anything for my driveway?
From November 15 to April 1 the City may call a ban for freezing rain or a forecast of 7 cm or more; overnight bans run 7 pm to 7 am. Cars on the street without a residential permit may be fined and towed, so a second car may sit in the driveway. Tell the company where it parks.
