Three kinds of Manotick property

Manotick is a community in Rideau-Jock Ward, in the rural south part of the City of Ottawa, on the Rideau River about 25 km from downtown. The old village grew around Watson’s Mill, the stone flour mill built in 1860. Around both sit homes on rural roads, where the City’s land beside the road can include a shoulder and a roadside ditch. Each prices differently, so name your street and the kind of lot.

Pricing a long lane

One firm’s 2026–27 quote form counts car spaces. It sells a season at a 5 cm trigger for $475 + HST on a single driveway that fits two cars, $530 on a double and $630 on a triple. A long lane to a house set well back is a different measurement, so ask the company how it would price your length.

HomeStars’ Canada-wide guide gives long or large driveways a line of their own: $85–$175+ per clearing, against $30–$90 for a standard driveway, and $115–$230 a visit for steep or difficult ones. HomeStars’ Manotick page puts a residential season at $300–$1,800+. The national guide also names travel fees for properties outside a company’s standard area, plus charges for extra depth and equipment. Put the length in metres in your request, and ask whether the quote is per visit, hourly or for the season.

The road edge, the ditch and the markers

The City’s right of way covers the roadway, the shoulder, driveway accesses and the strip beside private land; the City lists roadside ditches and snow storage among its uses. The Use and Care of Roads By-law 2003-498 bars pushing or shovelling snow onto it. On a rural lot, the cleared snow stays on your side of the line. geoOttawa shows that line approximately; a surveyor gives the exact one.

Schedule 4 of the licensing by-law governs contractors’ markers. Where a road has no sidewalk, they stand at least 2.1 m (7 ft) back from the travelled road, at most 1.22 m (4 ft) tall, two per driveway, and go in no earlier than October 20 and come out by April 30. Two extra plain markers may stand on your own land. Full detail: driveway markers.

A house more than 18 metres from the property line must have a 9-1-1 blade sign under the Addressing By-law.

Gravel, branches and the mailbox

Gravel shifts until the ground freezes. One Kanata–Stittsville firm says some stones get blown onto the lawn before they harden into place, and its terms make the owner rake them off in spring. The same terms ask owners to trim branches to 10 feet of clearance over the driveway. Surface by surface: gravel driveway snow removal.

The City repairs a rural roadside mailbox its plow hit, but excludes damage from snow thrown off the wing.

Open ground and drifting snow

Environment Canada’s 1981–2010 normals for Ottawa airport give about 223 cm of snow a year, 15 days with 5 cm or more, and about 9 days with blowing snow. One Kanata–Stittsville firm’s terms leave drifted snow to the owner.

For residential roads and lanes with 7 cm or more of accumulation, the City’s page says routes may take 10 to 16 hours after the last snowflake; its examples are urban streets. The ridge the plow leaves at the end of your lane is yours to clear: see windrow clearing.

Who may clear a rural lane, and how to check

Anyone running a snow plow business in Ottawa needs a snow plow contractor licence. The City exempts people clearing with a shovel or a manual snow blower, and farmers who only clear snow to help out the community.

The City’s SNOW KNOWledge brochure tells residents to ask for proof of licence, look for an orange plate with a valid annual sticker, and check the list at ottawa.ca/consumerawareness. In Ontario, a contract over $50 should be in writing, and a written estimate in it caps the final price at 10% above unless you sign a change.

Who you are dealing with

Ottawa Snow Desk passes your Manotick request to one independent local snow removal company. That company calls you back, prices the winter and does the clearing under its own contract.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Is your price set by length, by the hour or by car spaces, and what length did you price?
  2. Is there a travel charge for an address outside the village?
  3. Which machine will clear my lane, and how do you handle gravel before the ground freezes?
  4. Do you return for the City windrow and for drifts, and is each return billed separately?
  5. Can I see your snow plow contractor licence and the total with HST in writing before the season starts?

Have this ready for the call

  • Your street and nearest main road, such as Manotick Main Street, River Road, Rideau Valley Drive or Prince of Wales Drive
  • Driveway length and width in metres, with a photo from the road
  • Surface: asphalt, gravel, interlock, or a mix of them
  • Where snow can go on your own land, clear of the ditch and the road shoulder
  • Obstacles near the edge: mailbox, culvert ends, rocks, low branches
  • Whether the house has a 9-1-1 blade sign at the road

Questions people ask

Will a company charge more because I live outside the village?

It can. HomeStars lists travel fees for properties outside a provider’s standard area. Ask whether the price includes travel.

The City plow knocked down my mailbox. Who fixes it?

Report it to the City. A supervisor checks the cause; if the plow hit it, staff repair it or put in a basic mailbox, with a temporary post until spring if the post broke. Damage from snow thrown off the plow’s wing is excluded.

Who clears snow that blows back across the lane?

Check the contract. One Kanata–Stittsville firm’s terms leave drifted snow to the owner, so ask about a return visit for drifts.

Can a farmer down the road clear my lane?

Farmers who clear snow to help the community as a normal farm practice are exempt from the City’s snow plow contractor licence. Anyone selling plowing as a business needs it.

Is there help with the cost in Manotick?

Rural Ottawa South Support Services runs Snow Go and Snow Go Assist for Manotick (K4M). Snow Go Assist pays up to 50% per event, to $250 a season, or $450 for a rural home with an excessively high cost. Applicants must be 60 or older or have a disability, have household income under the City’s limit ($51,500 single, $62,000 for two or more), and have no one at home able to do the work. A signed snow removal contract or proof of payment is required. The 2026/2027 deadline is November 27, 2026.
